Critter Shack, Inc. was founded in 2002 by several citizens who were interested in finding solutions for the large number of abandoned, adoptable animals in Menard and the surrounding area. Funded by donations, fund-raisers, adoptions, and grants, the organization has been successful in rescuing thousands of adoptable animals. In 2012, Critter Shack successfully placed for adoption 751 dogs and cats, more than any other rescue organization in the Concho Valley. All of the dogs and cats offered for adoption are spayed or neutered, furthering the organization’s goal of reducing the numbers of homeless pets in need of rescue. Many of the rescued animals come from area shelters in the Concho Valley and many are scheduled for euthanasia. Critter Shack takes in dogs and cats from San Angelo, Menard, Eden, Eldorado, Ozona, Grape Creek, Brady, Junction, McCamey, Crane, Rowena, Ballinger, Eola, Belton, Mertzon, Mason and many other area communities.
Critter Shack advocates for the humane treatment of animals, works to prevent the abandonment of animals, facilitates a spay and neuter program, provides education in animal care, behavior, and humane treatment, along with establishing an ongoing program designed to find caring homes for rescued animals. As part of these efforts, Critter Shack links with Petfinder.com, the online searchable database of adoptable animals and is a partner with Petsmart, which provides an on-site area for adoptable cats and offers space outside the facility in San Angelo for dog adoptions twice monthly. Petsmart also makes a monetary donation for each animal that is adopted on-site. Critter Shack recognizes that education and free or low cost spay/neuter are the solutions to pet overpopulation and abandonment.
